What is a Bankruptcy?

There are three types of bankruptcies: 7, 11, and 13. Chapter 7 does the most damage to your credit score. In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, after secured creditors are paid, all "unsecured debts" are terminated and are paid if any money remains.

Chapter 13, also known as "individual reorganization" is typically used small businesses or wage earners. This type of bankruptcy reduces the amount of payments to creditors over a period of time and will delay the repayment.

Chapter 11 resembles a Chapter 13 but is mostly used by larger businesses. When trying to save your credit score, a Chapter 11 or 13 is preferable since it is less drastic than a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and resembles more of a payment restructuring.
